Nike is preparing to release a special Dunk High that celebrates San Francisco’s Chinatown and honors the people, values, and culture that helped build one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia.
These Dunk Highs tell the story of “Gam Saan,” or “Gold Mountain,” which attracted immigrants who carved out a place for themselves during the California Gold Rush. Details on the shoe are inspired by this neighborhood and its surrounding city. Earthy tones on the premium suede and leather-constructed upper are paired with an ocean-blue outsole is a nod to the California landscape. A Gold Mountain graphic on the heel is symbolic of hope, while the tongues and insoles feature lotus flowers and characters spelling 旧金山 (Gau Gam Saan, or “Old Gold Mountain”), which is intended to communicate a blessing with each step.
The “Gold Mountain” Dunk High will release for $135 ($115 for gradeschool sizes) on Tuesday, May 9 via SNKRS.
